Relationships

Posted by Joshua

How many have you been through?
How many have you failed in?
How many has it been your fault?
How many have you had your heart broken?
How many times have you broken someones heart?

A curious poll that I thought I'd make up, I'm going through my own relationship breakup at the moment but I won't share the gritty details.

Please share your thoughts?

Car - Warrant Of Fitness Failed

Posted by Joshua

WOF or Warrant of Fitness that you have to obtain every 6 months for your car to be legal.

I had to get mine done and it failed on a CV Boot and a Lower Ball Joint Link on my 98 Toyota Levin BZ-R, CV cost 15$ but I've got to somehow fit it to the car and the link turned out to be an expensive part...local Toyota Dealer said they had one there on the shelf for 280NZD, I just ordered it online from RHD Japan for only 122.28NZD.

Bargain if you ask me, fitting it shouldn't be too hard, now I just need to find a thing to install a CV Boot with...

Gardening - Update

Posted by Joshua

Further to add to an older post I'll show you pictures of around the garden of some before and afters.

Today I tried to fix the whole watering/sprinkler system that the house has, a few had their heads chopped off after someones been through with a lawnmower or something of the sort and others have damaged piping where someones gone to dig and nearly cut the piping in two.  Pictures of the sprinklers i'll put up tomorrow but otherwise I found it awesomely fun doing it all.

Note that there is a path going up to the seat...it just happens to be covered with weeds/grass/plants/etc

After searching for hours for the best templates for my 3 blogs I've determined that the only good way of doing it is to build it yourself.

Doesn't seem to be much out there in the range of Simplicity mixed with Efficiency and overall just looks great.  If anyone can recommend one that would be great otherwise I'll create one :D.

Review - AutoPager

Posted by Joshua

AutoPager is an addon for the popular Mozilla Firefox Web browser, if you're not currently using Firefox I highly recommend it not just for its speed/security but for the amount of addon's and little things that make life that much easier.

AutoPager works with most websites where you have more than one page of information, say my blog for example instead of having to click  "Older Posts".  AutoPager would automatically load it at the bottom of the page once you scroll down eliminating the need to reload another whole page.

This can be useful on both news websites & forums alike, I've been using it for the past 3 days after my friend introduced me to it and I've loved it ever since.

Here is the proper review and a link to the add-on itself.

"The AutoPager Firefox extension automatically loads the next page of a site inline when you reach the end of the current page for infinite scrolling of content. It includes a adblock similar features to allow you filter out the ads from the contents in the loaded page contents. It works well with most of the greasemonkey scripts. By default AutoPager works with a ton of sites, including Lifehacker, the New York Times, Digg, and, of course, Google. If you want to add your own custom autopaging to unsupported sites, the site wizard feature makes it easy (first pick the Next link, then pick only the content you want loaded. The site workshop provide more features like auto discovery the links and content. It's configuration is base on XPath. You can find there is a built in function to create a XPath by click some links on the pages. This extension will import online configuration from this sources, these configurations includes support for some widely used sites and some general support for forums. You can also share your site rules by click public button in the setting dialog."

Download it here

Feel free to add your own Small review of it or if anyone finds it useful at all.

Currently waiting to hear from the Earthquake commission here to see if they'll give me a grant for hardship due to the Earthquake causing some trouble here in my living situation.

In the meantime I bring you the famous Internet Explorer vs Firefox...

Heres one persons opinion...

"As I am a web developer, I cannot give you an unbiased review of FF v IE. I can, however, tell you why people are of the opinion IE sucks so much.

The W3C create web standards. These standards make sure that in every browser, the website you view will look the same. These standards specify the syntax of each command, where they can be used, what modifiers you can use with them, and so on, so forth.

IE has never played well with standards. IE has these quirks that means you can't do specific things that the standards say you can, and every other browser says you can. The IE team has used the fact they have a significant market share to slow down web development by refusing to implement certain languages that would make the web more accessible and better in terms of usefulness.

As a web developer, I end up having to make a site with interactivity and amazing features... and then a second site that works in IE. A dulled down, worse version without any of the HTML5 or CSS3. A site with limited functionality, because that's all IE will do for me.

I hate IE because it makes me take up twice my time to make both a standard and a mediocre version of a site, the mediocre version not even standards compliant by W3C's checker because if I do it right, IE can't display it properly. I hope IE9 will fix this, their first test build looks good, but... with still about 10-20% of all users having IE6, I'm never going to be able to get away from the fact I either have the web savvy crew, on firefox and other browsers, saying 'Needs more interactivity, try using the new languages that <my browser> supports!', or the basic user, not knowing or caring what web browser they use (they just want some web pages) saying 'OMG THIS SITE IZ BROKED 4 MEEEE HELP PLZZZZZ' - both of which are just annoying.

Oh, and from a security standpoint? IE uses this scripting language called ActiveX. It's not a standard. It's a closed source model that IE won't give anyone else. It means if you go to a site that uses ActiveX controls (which have been repeatedly exploited in the past) then if you use anything other than IE... it won't run, and you probably won't be able to use the site. Again, the IE team wanting to make something special for them, and not caring about the loss of compatibility."

What are your guys opinions?

Camp

Posted by Joshua

Just got back from a camp that my girlfriends parents run.

About four times a year they run camps for 7-9 year olds at risk, it was pretty cool out at the location they had this time. The leaders are 16-25 year olds and each has about 5-7 kids in their team, throughout the whole time you're responsible for them and doing random activities and fun things during the day. It is a Christian camp for those who're skeptical but what do you people think about it?

Not really going to review this as Husky does a great job in the video, but this is of a Custom Map that's getting popular on Starcraft 2.  Just about to try it myself but hope you enjoy the video.

Basics is people all spawn on the map with the general main + workers.
2 people are selected as Phantoms and their job is to destroy everyone else on the map but they also get different incomes along with other people who're chosen as Paladins.

Anyway check it out guys.

Computer Chair Broke

Posted by Joshua

So yesterday morning I decided to sit down on my beautiful beloved chair to have it slightly leaning forward... I proceeded to get up and sit down again only to have it on a 90 degree angle, I had a look at the bottom only to realize that the part where its welded onto the mechanism near the gas thing had cracked wide open and was sinking in.

Luckily enough I remembered it had a 5 year guarantee on it, however I couldn't find the receipt (I always keep receipts but I had everything but this!) Today I took it back to the store with a bank printout proving that I bought it only to find out it was something that I'd purchased a few months beforehand (My desk and filing cabinet).

After talking with the guy for about 20 minutes they ended up giving me a whole new chair that's worth 250NZD when the original I got for 160NZD....I believe it was a complete win.

Sorry there's no pictures as I completely forgot about it :D

The Loudness War - Music

Posted by Joshua

The following youtube clip was from a friends facebook wallpost, I thought some of you may find it quite informative and useful.

As for my own opinions on it I completely agree with what they're saying with loudness compared to songs of the 80's with the exception to electronic/trance/techno and that kind of stuff which has turned more digital rather than standard recording drums/etc.

Duck Rape?

Posted by Joshua

So was I was diriving my car in the early hours of this morning I noticed a mother and father duck with 5-6 babies following behind them.  They decided it would be a nice idea to crosss to that...which isn't a probably as i'm one of those kind people who would stop for them anyway.

But the funniest part was that the male duck was trying to stick it in the female duck the whole way by continously trying to mount her across the road.  I thought this was absolutely priceless.

Lets say you've gone back in time...

Posted by Joshua

Most of you would've seen this before but check it out anyway its pretty cool, don't be lazy with TLDR!!

If aliens ever land on Earth there will no longer be any confusion over who will greet them with the news the United Nations is set to appoint an astrophysicist to be their first human contact.
Mazlan Othman is expected to be tasked with coordinating humanity's response to an extraterrestrial visit, if ever required.
The 58-year-old Malaysian will tell a conference next week that with the recent discovery of hundreds of planets orbiting around other stars, the detection of alien life is becoming more and more likely.

Mazlan Othman
Take us to your leader: Mazlan Othman is expected to be tasked with coordinating humanity's response to an extraterrestrial visit

Ms Othman, currently the head of the UN's Office for Outer Space Affairs (Unoosa), recently told fellow scientists that mankind needed to be ready to deal with alien contact.

'The continued search for extraterrestrial communication, by several entities, sustains the hope that some day human kind will received signals from extraterrestrials,' she said.
'When we do, we should have in place a coordinated response that takes into account all the sensitivities related to the subject.
'The UN is a ready-made mechanism for such coordination.'
ET
Friendly? Professor Stephen Hawking has questioned the theory of non-threatening alien visitors, such as ET in the Hollywood film

Plans to make Unoose the coordinating body for dealing with alien encounters are set to be debated by UN scientific advisory committees.
If the idea is backed it will then head to General Assembly.
Professor Richard Crowther, head of the UK delegation to the UN committee, admitted recently: '[Ms] Othman is absolutely the nearest thing we have to a "take me to your leader" person.'
In April though Professor Stephen Hawking warned that the alien contact, if it ever comes, may not be as friendly as has been hoped.
In a documentary, the 68-year-old scientist said he imagined aliens arriving in 'massive ships' and could try to colonise Earth and plunder the planet's resources.
'We only have to look at ourselves to see how intelligent life might develop into something we wouldn’t want to meet,' he said.
'I imagine they might exist in massive ships, having used up all the resources from their home planet. Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonise whatever planets they can reach.'
He added: 'It would be 'too risky' to attempt to make contact with alien races. If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the Native Americans.'

Lindsay Lololhan

Posted by Joshua

Sorry for people that don't care but I just find it absolutely priceless that shes back in there lol.

Lindsay Lohan has returned to jail in handcuffs after a judge refused to set bail and ordered her to remain in custody for failing a drug test until another hearing nearly a month away.
Bailiffs escorted the troubled starlet from the Beverly Hills courtroom immediately after the hearing that lasted less than 10 minutes. She arrived at the Century Regional Detention Center in Lynwood a short time later, with sheets held up around her to shield her from sight.
It will be Lohan's third jail stint for a three-year-old drug and drink-driving case filed after a pair of high-profile arrests in 2007.
Before the hearing, the "Mean Girls" star chatted with her lawyer, smiling and laughing. But moments before Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Elden S Fox took the bench, she began fidgeting with her earrings and looking to the back of the courtroom, where were two bondsmen sat, prepared to post the actress' bail.
Lohan's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, asked Fox whether Lohan's full probation revocation hearing could be delayed a week.
"I think your client would rather have it on October 22," Fox said, giving the first hint that he intended to send the actress to jail.
Holley rose to argue that bail should be set. "Nope," Fox replied.
"Oh God," Michael Lohan said as bailiffs moved in and his daughter rose and was handcuffed.
Lohan has twice been released early because of overcrowding, with her longest jail stay a 14-day stint on a 90-day sentence earlier this summer.
But this time, the judge's order diminishes the likelihood that Lohan will be released before the October 22 hearing, when her positive drug test will be discussed.
"When you put the judge in a tight spot, he has no alternative," said Barry Gerald Sands, a lawyer who has represented celebrity clients in drug cases. "She will not get out now."
Court spokesman Allan Parachini said whether Lohan gets credit the time she's serving now depends on whether Fox formally sentences her to jail time later.
"This isn't a sentence," Parachini said. "She was remanded to custody pending a hearing date."
The previous judge handling Lohan's case had said she had to set bail for Lohan because she was facing misdemeanors.
"This judge feels he didn't have to set bail," Sands said, adding that Fox's orders are rarely overturned.
Fox said Lohan had a "positive test for a controlled substance" that he did not identify. He said probation officials are also reviewing Lohan's compliance with other aspects of her probation, which included frequent meetings with counselors.
"I think that the case law is clear that she is entitled to bail," Holley said after the hearing. She would not say whether she would appeal Fox's ruling and left the courthouse with Lohan's mother Dina, who carried her daughter's shoes and jewellry in a clear plastic bag.

Los Angeles television stations followed a car said to be carrying Lohan to jail.
She and her mother had arrived at the courthouse together an hour before, while the actress's father - with whom she's publicly sparred - arrived earlier.
The actress acknowledged failing a court-ordered drug screening last week in a series of Twitter postings.
It was the star's first appearance before Fox, who had said at a previous hearing he would sentence her to a month in jail for each drug test she skipped or failed.
The actress wasn't present for that hearing, which was held hours after her release from rehab.
Lohan seemed to acknowledge an addiction problem after news of her positive drug test broke last week.
"Substance abuse is a disease, which unfortunately doesn't go away over night," Lohan posted on her Twitter feed last Friday. "I am working hard to overcome it and am taking positive steps.
"This is certainly a setback for me but I am taking responsibility for my actions and I'm prepared to face the consequences," her posts said.
The actress remains on probation for a reckless driving and two driving under the influence charges, all misdemeanors. Fox dropped two drug cases at a hearing in August during which he announced Lohan's release from rehab and set out a strict outpatient treatment schedule that included random drug screenings.
Fox has sealed Lohan's court file, but a source familiar with the case has told The Associated Press that the actress' failed test came roughly two weeks after her release from rehab.

Woke up this morning to my girlfriend not seeing the flower i'd gotten her so it was a bit of a fail :(  Went out in the middle of the night to get some.  But anyway...so I'm sitting here watching

I'm thinking that it looks exactly like the other one?  I never been a fan of turn based games much but this seems to be gaining alot of support and reviews.  Heres some infos below.

Civilization 5 Launch Trailer [HD]
Developer: Firaxis Games
Release: Q4/2010
Genre: RTS
Platform: PC
Publisher: 2K Games
Website: http://www.civilization5.com/
Sid Meiers Civilization V is the fifth offering in the multi-award winning Civilization strategy games series featuring the famous just one more turn addictive gameplay that has made it one of the greatest game series of all time.

The Good

  • Hours of addictive turn-based glee
  • Fantastic new tactical combat system
  • Excellent interface makes it easy to keep track of every aspect of the game
  • Great automation features allow you to focus on the big picture
  • Lovely visuals and classical soundtrack.

The Bad

  • Inconsistent, overly aggressive AI
  • Scattered annoyances, particularly in multiplayer.
Strategy fanatics have lost hundreds of hours of their lives to Sid Meier's beguiling creations over the years, and they should prepare to lose hundreds more. Civilization V is yet another glistening example of turn-based bliss that will keep you up long past your bedtime. It exercises its power over your mind using many of the tricks the series has long been known for: varied ways of accomplishing your goal of world domination, the thrill of expanding a paltry city into a bustling empire, and the suspense of venturing into unknown territory. The latest Civilization game takes those basics and layers onto them new features that make moment-to-moment gameplay feel more dynamic than in the past. Most noticeably, the square grids of previous Civilization games have been jettisoned in favor of hexagons that nicely accommodate the other most consequential transformations: Military units can no longer be stacked, and ranged units can fire from multiple tiles away. The tactical combat that rises from these modifications is a lot of fun and makes warfare a lot more exciting than in Civ games of yore. AI quirks and a few other minor issues become apparent the more you play, but these are wholly forgivable foibles in an attractive and sophisticated game that constantly begs you to remain at your keyboard for just one more turn.

Unsure what gave me the idea to put this here, but I drive past it at least once a day...and its always sitting there....Rusted up....with suitcases ontop.

On the back there's a logo saying "Rust isn't a crime."

I'm not even sure if it still goes...

Content-Aware d' the numberplate off for their safety from nublets.  Although if you're spec'ops you can see the reflection in off my bonnet.

Can anyone take a guess what/who this is?  Looks like a new meme fase to me.

These tickets WERE initially purchased in the hope of taking our boyfriends BUT after mitigating circumstances (breakups and the like) we are now on the hunt for two amazing people to take their places.
Now we dont just expect you to bid without listing our qualities which make us probably the most fun people in the world to sit next to at a concert.

Chanel - Chanel is obviously a beauty. Blonde, outgoing with a laugh that makes you want to smile. She has done gymnastics and can wow you with her circus trick (dislocating her shoulder). She knows how to talk and dont you worry every SECOND of the evening will be captured by Chanel-take-lots-of-snaps-Harris.

Celia - Celia is a breathtaking stunner. Also blonde, with wit and jokes that will keep you amused for hours. Her favourite way of meeting new people is the infamous lip tuck face, something that needs to be seen to be believed. Celias ability to spin a yarn actually won us a trip to Australia with local NZ celebs Fletch and Vaughan from the Edge, so dont be shy give Celia a try!

Dont just purchase regular U2 tickets of hawkers, upgrade to the deluxe option, TWO INSTANT FRIENDS! We also plan to stalk Bono after the concert.. if youre down.. we are down...
You shouldnt let this opportunity pass you by...
Regards, oh and looking forward to sitting next you future pals!

Earthquake Damage - My House

Posted by Joshua

These are the main cracks that were recently revealed in our house when the builder took some wallpaper and such off.

This is hardly anything compared to how the rest of the city suffered, but as far as I know they're going to have to rebuild the walls on that side of the house.

Trampoline Tricks

Posted by Joshua

As there's a trampoline right outside my door (Its my niece's) I decided I wanted to tackle the beast and learn some moves.

All I can really do so far is land on my chest, knees.  My goal for today is complete a front flip or back flip, if I don't post tommorow its probably because I've fallen over the edge and died :P
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Tuck Jumps
A tuck jump requires the trampolinist to bring both knees to the chest and to touch the shins with each respective hand. The move is completed at the top of the bounce and the knees and feet are kept close together with the toes pointed.

At first the participant may only be able to raise their knees slightly but with practice they will be able to bring their knees higher. Many people tend to drop their shoulders in an attempt to achieve the ball shape but this will lead to problems later on. It is important to keep the shoulders lifted and bring the legs up to the chest. Once the basic tuck jump can be performed it can be tidied up by involving the arms in a stretch-touch-stretch motion. The arms will reach upwards during the upwards bounce, the first ‘stretch’. As the knees come up to the chest the hands will quickly move downwards to ‘touch’ the knees before ‘stretching’ upwards again with the downwards movement of the bounce. This is a very fast exchange and often takes a little practice to get the timings right. Once this arm movement has been perfected it should also be applied to straddle and pike jumps.

A straddle jump is best learnt whilst the participant is sitting on the floor. The legs are opened to at least a 90° angle, more if the participant is flexible, and toes pointed. The hands then reach towards the toes and the back is kept straight. Once on the trampoline the participant will recreate the shape at the top of their bounce.
The participant should make an effort to maintain their balance during their take off and landing as the momentum of lifting the legs both upwards and forwards can cause a few wobbles.

The pike jump is also best learnt on the floor before attempting on the trampoline. This time the participant will sit with the legs straight out in front and their toes pointed. The hands should slide as far as they can down the shins to produce an angle of 90° or less between the legs and body.
When recreating the shape in the air the trampolinist should remember to lift their legs upwards rather than allowing their upper body to drop resulting in a downwards pointing pike jump. As with the straddle jump, balance is the key when perfecting this move.

  1. 1
Learn the most important trampoline basic move. It is the tuck jump. How on earth do you think you can do a double front or back if you can't tuck up fast enough to get the rotation needed?

  2. 2
Learn the straddle jump and the pike jump. These are important for getting balance and pre-determining later moves.

  3. 3
Learn to do half twist and full twist jumps. These may sound boring, but you need to know how to do them as "late twists" and not using your arms and twisting from the bed.

  4. 4
Learn seat drops. Half twist to seat drop; seat drop half twist out; and swivel hips. This helps with learning to get your hips up and how to twist in and out of moves.

  5. 5
Learn front drops and back drops. Then learn how to twist into them and how to twist out of them. These fundamental moves will teach you about 'forward' movement and 'backward' moves. Believe it or not... the front drop is "Backward movement and the back drop is a forward movement. Understanding this is important if your want to do forward or backward flips.

  6. 6
Learn an array of moves such as the cradle. This is a back drop half twist to back drop, the seat roll seat (roller), The airplane (full twist to front drop) and the full twist to back drop.

  7. 7
Learn the cody. This is a back flip in to a front drop and lift straight into a back somersault.

  8. 8
Learn the barani. This is a front somersault with a half twist - with the key twisting late - just like the roller!

  9. 9
Be aware that these are all tricks which require a clever skill of knowing 'when' to twist. By way of a hint, it's late twisting and twist from the hips). Of course, once you have learned all the fundamentals, you can start learning clever trampoline tricks including the Front flip which is a combination of the tuck jump and backward motion of a front drop. Or the Back flip which is a combination of the Seat drop (hips forward) - in to a back drop (hips up), utilizing the tuck jump!

This is one crazy video below...I'm pretty sure I'd need a circle trampoline for anything similar.
